Resources, environment and sustainable in Vietnam in respone to emerging development demands

On October 16, 2025, VNU University of Science (VNU-HUS) hosted Thematic Session 6 of the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, under the theme “Resources, environment and sustainable in Vietnam in respone to emerging development demands”.

The seminar is part of a series of eight thematic sessions leading up to the plenary session of the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies—a major academic event co-organized by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), bringing together hundreds of scholars from Vietnam and around the world.

The series aims to promote research and teaching in Vietnamese Studies within the context of globalization, while linking research outcomes to national sustainable development policymaking.

The seminar featured two notable keynote presentations. Prof. Dr. Mai Trọng Nhuận (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) delivered a talk on “Innovating Approaches to Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation to Meet Vietnam’s Rapid and Sustainable Development Goals.” Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Luc Hens (Flemish Institute for Technological Research, Kingdom of Belgium) presented online a paper titled “Environmental Management at Vietnam’s Seaports.”

The seminar was divided into two sub-sessions: Sub-session 1: “Resources, Environment, and Sustainable Development” and Sub-session 2: “Climate Change and Sustainable Development,” each featuring five presentations.

All presentations aimed to contribute to the realization of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on two key priorities: the protection of marine and terrestrial resources. These discussions reaffirmed the pioneering role of the Vietnamese scientific community in providing scientific evidence to support sustainable development policymaking.

The outcomes of Thematic Session 6 will also be integrated with those of the other seven thematic sessions and the plenary conference to form a comprehensive policy recommendation report for submission to the Party and State authorities.

In his closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trần Quốc Bình, Vice Rector of the University of Science (VNU-HUS), highly appreciated the quality and applicability of the presented studies:

“These research works not only help clarify Vietnam’s current situation and challenges in resource management but also propose strategic solutions ranging from micro to macro levels - from microplastic and heavy metal pollution to land-use planning, carbon credits, and regional linkage policies.”

The outcomes of Thematic Session 6 will be integrated with those of the other seven thematic sessions within the framework of the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies to finalize a policy recommendation report for submission to the Party and State, contributing to the formulation of a new phase of Vietnam’s national sustainable development strategy.

According to the plan, the plenary session of the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, themed “Sustainable Development in the New Era,” will take place on October 25, 2025, at the National Innovation Center (NIC), Hòa Lạc. The event is expected to attract hundreds of scholars, policymakers, representatives of international organizations, and domestic management agencies, aiming to strengthen knowledge exchange and foster interdisciplinary cooperation between Vietnamese and international research institutions.
