VNU University of Languages and International Studies and the U.S. Embassy promote a nationwide English teacher development model

On May 13, 2026, VNU University of Languages and International Studies (VNU-ULIS), in collaboration with the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the Embassy of the United States in Hanoi, officially launched the “American English Viewing Marathon 2026” project.

Representatives of participating organizations officially launched the “American English Viewing Marathon 2026” project

As part of the ULIS CONNECT 2026 series, the program is designed as a large-scale professional development initiative for English teachers, pre-service English teachers, lecturers, and teacher educators nationwide.

The project aims to promote the use of high-quality Open Educational Resources (OER) while fostering a nationwide Community of Practice, enabling English teachers to pursue continuous, flexible, and self-directed professional development.

The program is delivered through an online, self-paced learning format via the RELOLearn platform. Participants will have access to high-quality learning materials from American English, combined with interactive activities, assessments, and ongoing support throughout the learning period from May 15 to August 15, 2026.

Target participants include English teachers at the general education level, particularly those in localities with limited access to high-quality professional development opportunities; English pedagogy students; lecturers and teacher educators at universities; and educational administrators in the field of foreign language education.

Participants who complete the program will receive certificates of completion and have opportunities to earn one of 100 professional development scholarships awarded to the most outstanding learners. In addition, the top 10 participants will be specially recognized. The program also offers opportunities for educators across the country to connect, exchange teaching experiences, and grow professionally together.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Do Tuan Minh, Secretary of the Party Committee of VNU University of Languages and International Studies, acknowledged the meaningful support provided by RELO to both the University and Vietnam’s education sector at a time when the country’s education system is entering a new phase, with the goal of making English a second language in schools.

He noted that English had previously been viewed mainly as a subject, whereas the current vision extends toward building an ecosystem in which English is used naturally and regularly. In recent years, many educational institutions have actively implemented initiatives to realize this goal. He also emphasized that the “American English Viewing Marathon 2026” project is a meaningful activity within the University’s ULIS CONNECT 2026 series and serves as a practical and well-organized professional training channel.

Representing the partner side, Mr. Shaun Boda, Cultural Affairs Officer at the Embassy of the United States in Hanoi, expressed his appreciation to the University for its close cooperation and dedicated efforts in implementing the program. He shared his expectation that the University would achieve even greater goals in the future and expand its nationwide influence in education and English language development. He also hoped the program would continue achieving remarkable outcomes and attract an increasing number of participants.

Following a presentation by the organizing committee on the implementation plan, operational model, and objectives of the project, representatives from participating organizations officially launched the “American English Viewing Marathon 2026” initiative. The event is expected to become an important milestone in English teacher professional development, contributing to the creation of an open, modern, and internationally integrated educational community.
