Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is dedicated to advancing the quality and effectiveness of international cooperation while preserving Vietnam’s cultural identity in education and training. With a strong commitment to nurturing young Vietnamese talent, VNU seeks to build long-term, strategic partnerships with leading universities and international organizations. These collaborations focus on joint research, technology transfer, faculty and student exchanges, and the co-organization of international conferences and academic programs.
Currently, VNU maintains formal partnerships with over 400 higher education institutions and organizations worldwide. These include many globally renowned universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Illinois, Brown University, Tufts University, University of Hawaii, University of Oregon, Princeton University, University of California (USA); University of East London, University of Leeds, University of Nottingham, University of East Anglia (UK); Paris University of Technology, Paris-Sud University, Toulouse University (France); University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University (Japan); Seoul National University (Korea); Peking University, Tsinghua University (China); and the National University of Singapore, among others. These connections enable VNU students and staff to access global academic environments while attracting international scholars to work and collaborate at VNU.
Based on signed framework agreements with international partners, VNU's member universities and affiliated institutions develop and implement specific collaborative programs in research, teaching, and academic development. This decentralized yet aligned approach allows for flexible cooperation while maintaining overall strategic direction at the institutional level.
VNU is an active member of several prominent regional and international education networks. It is one of the founding members of the East Asian Universities Group (BESETOHA), which includes Peking University (China), Seoul National University (Korea), and the University of Tokyo (Japan). VNU also participates in the ASEAN University Network (AUN), the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP), the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). VNU’s leadership has been acknowledged through elected positions such as Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) and Secretary General of the Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL). Member institutions are also engaged with global initiatives under organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
VNU’s academic standing is further affirmed by the influence and international presence of its researchers and lecturers, who regularly contribute to global academic conferences, international projects, and editorial boards of high-ranking scientific journals. The university has hosted several major international events, including sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, thereby enhancing its visibility and leadership in global education and research.
As the largest and most comprehensive higher education and research institution in Vietnam, VNU plays a central role in the country’s development strategy. It is tasked with training high-quality human resources and cultivating talent to meet the demands of industrialization, modernization, and global integration.
In response to emerging technological trends and the global digital transformation, VNU has recently strengthened its capacity in artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovation. It has established the Institute for Applied Research of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development under the VNU Technology and Innovation Park, along with a AI Laboratory at the University of Engineering and Technology. These initiatives aim to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, foster innovation, and contribute to sustainable development through advanced AI applications.
