3.1. Content
Aggression is a negative psychological phenomenon, a behavior that is intended to inflict physical or mental trauma on another person or oneself.
From the perspective of psychological science, aggression is the most complex behavior of social psychological behavior. Meanwhile, this psychological phenomenon appears frequently in the social interaction and the negative effects of this behavior is difficult to predict for society and civilization. Aggression does not only take form of insults, story setup that intends to hurt others, problem solving by violence between individuals and groups. Revenge, hired murder, terrorism, war are all manifestations of aggression. Aggression is ubiquitous, from a little friction between children in family, child beating by parent or parental violence, to bullying at school, in the office or public place; from a verbal attack in National Assembly to the bombing, invasion…, all of those aim to cause psychological, physical trauma or property damage.
Project titled “Aggressive behavior – Analysis from the perspective of Social psychology” is analysed based on result of empirical research and a variety of resource material at home and abroad. This project is divided into five chapters.
Chapter I: AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR – GENERAL PERSPECTIVE
This chapter briefly presents different aspects of human life: from wars, invasions, destructive devastation, to the declarations, aggressive arguments between political leaders; from protests, riots, massacres in society to aggressions in family, school, public place. Chapter I also explain aggressive behavior from cultural perspective (such as belief, rules, lifestyle of communities who accept the existence of aggressive behavior) and from gender perspective (the difference between males and females in aggression). The purpose of this chapter is to “expose” different types of aggression used by humans to inflict pain on one another, in the hope to warm us of potentially destructive risk, potential power of aggressive behavior.
Chapter II: APPROACHS TO UNDERSTANDING AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR
This chapter include analyses of how we understand aggressive behavior in humans. Thereby, we can analyse the variance of scientific viewpoint on aggression. Some experiments on aggressive behavior and and our study’s results on high school student’s understanding level of aggression. Online article about the origin of aggressive behavior is also analysed and presented. From theoretical perspective, approachs to aggressive behavior is presented to focuses on clarifying the concept of aggression, forms of aggression and explain the origin of aggressive behavior in humans.
Chapter III: FACTORS AFFECTING AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR
This chapter focuses to analyse the influence of biosocial factors on aggressive behavior in humans which indicates how ‘activating area?’ (vùng hưng phấn) make human behavior become aggressive, as well as variants of MAOA gene that cause aggressive predisposition in some people. Particularly, high levels of testosterone in blood (especially in male) directly affect aggressive behavior. Part of the research on social factors affecting aggressive behavior has mentioned stimuli such as heat (temperature), stimulants (alcohol, drugs..), as well as psychological factors such as cognition, emotion, insult, provocation… Communicative factors, such as books, movies, pornographic picture, violent online games that affect aggressive behavior in humans are particularly emphasized in this chapter.
Chapter IV: SCHOOL AGGRESSION
Apart from statistics of school aggression in the world and in Vietnam, this chapter focuses on analyzing results of our study on the situation of school aggression in Vietnam, in which we emphasize the phenomenon of school aggression and its consequences. The final section of this chapter introduces a number of online articles reflecting situation of school aggression in Vietnam today.
Chapter V: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
One of the most “pitiful and deplorable” form of aggression is domestic violence. This chapter refers to legal aspect of the documents pertaining to domestic violence. Theoretical viewpoint of domestic violence as well as psychological traumas caused by domestic violence that women and children have to suffer. The final section of this chapter introduces online articles on the situation of domestic violence in Vietnam.
3.2. Scientific Value
This is the first study on social psychological phenomenon in humans carried out in Vietnam – Aggressive behavior. This study has accumulated, synthesized and analyzed aggressive behavior of humans from the foundation of knowledge and research viewpoint of Social psychology which clarifies basic concept of aggression-related issues, categorization of aggressive behavior, analysis of causes, consequences of aggressive behavior for individuals, groups, family and society.
Research results contribute to the construction of theoretical basis for the field of Social psychology. The method of study and analysis of practical issues based on scientific viewpoint will provide theories that can be applied by students to analyze a social psychological phenomenon that interests them.
3.3. Practical Value
The work is analysed from actual survey results. It provides knowledge on the situation of aggression among pupils, students and family violence in Vietnam. The results of this study will contribute to state’s policy planning for issues in family and school.
This book plays a certain role in preserving and promoting fine tradition of humanity values in human relationship; limiting and repelling violence in today society
3.4. Scope or characteristics of pratical applying of the Project
This book can be used as a topic for graduate students in the area of Social psychology and Sociology of the Family in the Universities and Research Institutes.
It can be used as a soure of reference for researcher of Social psychology and Sociology of Family and people who are interested in school and family issues.
