Honorary Doctor Degree conferred upon Prof. Douglas D. Osheroff

Within the framework of the fourth event series “Bridges – Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace” in Vietnam, on December 14, 2012, VNU solemnly conferred the Honorary Doctor Degree upon 1996 Nobel Laureate for Physics, Prof.Dr. Douglas D. Sheroff in recognition of his outstanding contributions for the development of science – technology, education – training of Vietnam in general and VNU in particular.

Representatives of Italian, Swedish and American embassies; International Peace Foundation (IPF); enterprises and organizations in and outside Vietnam; VNU President, Prof.Dr. Mai Trọng Nhuận and VNU Vice Presidents, Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Đức and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Kim Sơn, attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, VNU President emphasized that the world famous scholars coming to talk to VNU’s scientists, lecturers and students is a meaningful event, contributing to enhance dialogues and exchanges of information among multi-cultural societies in Southeast Asia, in attempt to promote the mutual understanding and trust.
IPF’s noble aim is to establish, through Nobel laureates, bridges among universities and research institutes in Southeast Asia region to build a sustainable foundation for regional peace, stability and prosperity.
Prof.Dr. Mai Trọng Nhuận believed that with his talent and prestige, Prof.Dr. Douglas D. Sheroff would create a firm bridge for promoting cooperation between VNU and American universities as well as motivate and stimulate the ambition for scientific discovery of Vietnamese young generation.
Prof.Dr. Douglas D. Sheroff expressed his appreciation at being conferred this honour and committed to spare all his efforts to promote the cooperation development in science – technology, education – training between VNU and American universities. He also highly appreciated VNU’s attempt to achieve international standards through strengthening scientific research, combining scientific research and training, expanding postgraduate training scale and effectively performing the Strategic Missions.
Also on this occasion, Prof.Dr. Douglas D. Sheroff had a talk on “How science changes our lives”, which was an opportunity for VNU’s staff and students to strengthen dialogues and discussions with this leading scientist, exchange experiences in scientific research, promote the international partnership and mutual understanding for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence.
In the morning of the same day, VNU leaders, IPF representatives and Prof.Dr. Douglas D. Sheroff had a meeting with Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology.
Since 2003, similar events organized by IPF in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia have brought efficient results.
VNU’s Honorary Doctor is a noble title conferred to leading scientists, distinguished politicians, outstanding socialists and those who have special contributions to the development of VNU, namely European Council President, H.E. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy; Ukraine National Assembly Chairman, Prof. Volodymyr Lytvyn; Prof. Susan Schwab; Prof. Tom Cannon; Prof. Ngô Bảo Châu, etc.
