Professor Hoang Anh Tuan awarded France’s prestigious academic honor

French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet has announced that Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan was awarded the title of Knight in the Order of Academic Palms (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques), under a decree signed by the French Prime Minister.

Prof. Tuan was honoured for his dedication and dynamism through the Vietnamica Programme and the Heritage Tourism Journeys in Hanoi project, both of which have played a decisive role in strengthening cooperation in social sciences and humanities between France and Vietnam.

The two initiatives were implemented during the 2020–2025 period under the academic leadership of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, in collaboration with the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie and the French Embassy in Vietnam.

The French Embassy in Vietnam is expected to hold an official ceremony to present the Order to Prof. Tuan, who currently serves as Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Born in 1976 in Thanh Hoa province, the rector earned his bachelor’s degree (1999) and master’s degree (2001) in Archaeology from Vietnam National University, Hanoi. He later pursued postgraduate studies in the Netherlands, obtaining a master’s degree (2002) and a doctorate (2006) in History from Leiden University.

Upon returning to Hanoi, he joined the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, serving successively as lecturer (2007), vice dean (2010), vice rector (2016), and rector (2021). He was appointed Associate Professor of History in 2012 and full Professor in 2019.

Prof. Tuan was actively engaged in international academic organisations, including SEASREP, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and SEAMEO-SPAFA. He also served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Montana (United States, 2009) and Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany, 2012–2013).

The Order of Academic Palms (l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques) is a prestigious order of the French Republic, established by Emperor Napoleon I in 1808 to honor outstanding achievements by French and foreign scientists, educators, and cultural figures.

More than 20 years ago, Professor Phan Huy Le was also awarded the Order of the Academic Palms by the Prime Minister of the Republic of France (2002). Professor Hoang Anh Tuan is the second scientist from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, to be awarded this prestigious Order by the Government of the Republic of France.
