VNU establishes the Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials

On March 26, 2025, VNU President signed Decision No. 1399/QD-DHQGHN on the establishment of the Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials under the VNU Technology and Innovation Park. The founding of the Institute not only marks a new milestone in VNU’s development in the field of high technology but also makes a significant contribution to the advancement of the semiconductor and advanced materials industry in Vietnam.

The Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials has the mission to research, develop, and apply semiconductor technologies and new materials in the electronics industry, high-tech sectors, and other related fields. The Institute will play a key role in VNU’s innovation ecosystem, closely integrating research, education, and practical application. It will focus on scientific research and technological development, emphasizing both basic and applied studies in semiconductor materials, nanomaterials, and advanced materials for creating high application value products. The Institute will serve as a hub and connector for training and developing human resources in the semiconductor field for the country. It will also act as a convergence point for collaboration with domestic and international universities and research institutions in training high-quality human resources in Semiconductor Technology and new materials. The Institute will also be a focal point for coordinating international cooperation programs in materials science and semiconductor technology, aiming to position Vietnam as one of the leading research and manufacturing centers for advanced materials in the region.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Ngoc Kiem, Director of the Technology and Innovation Park, emphasized that comprehensive research and development (R&D) activities will be implemented to build an innovation ecosystem in the high-tech sector. These activities include scientific research; incubation, development, application, and transfer of technologies; knowledge reception and transfer; consulting on the development of scientific research projects and market studies in related fields; commercialization of research products; providing supportive science and technology consulting services; offering regular science and technology services, and consultation to domestic and international organizations; training, workshops, and professional development.

The Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials focuses on high-impact, application-oriented research to help Vietnam keep pace with global technological trends. Key research areas include Semiconductor and Microchip Technologies, such as advanced design and fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs); MEMS/NEMS technologies for smart sensors and micro-electromechanical systems; AI chips, quantum computing, and energy-efficient microprocessors. Advanced Materials include Nanomaterials and 2D materials (e.g., graphene, MoS₂, phosphorene) for applications in electronics, biomedicine, and energy; Optoelectronic materials (e.g., perovskite, OLED, QLED) for next-generation display technologies and solar energy; Metamaterials and superconducting materials for telecommunications, defence, and medical applications.

The operational model of the Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials goes beyond theoretical research, aiming to build an integrated ecosystem that connects research, application, and training. It will serve as a dynamic environment where scientists both within and outside of VNU can conduct research and swiftly translate their findings into real-world applications in response to market demands.

The Institute will focus on cutting-edge scientific research and the development of core technologies in semiconductor chip manufacturing, advanced nanomaterials, next-generation batteries, and smart sensors. Besides research and training, the Institute will serve as a hub for practical application and innovation-driven entrepreneurship. Through the establishment of laboratories, testing centers, and support for research teams, the Institute will facilitate product development and tech-based startups in the fields of semiconductors and advanced materials within the VNU Town in Hoa Lac.
