VNU first-year students will study AI and digital technologies

In an effort to standardize students' digital competencies and take the lead in the digital transformation of higher education, on July 7, 2025, VNU President issued Decision No. 3499/QD-DHQGHN on introducing the course Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of the curriculum for all first-year students from the 2025 intake. This course will be conducted and managed by VNU Institute of Digital Education and Testing.

This strategic move aims to equip students with essential digital skills to meet the demands of international integration, and affirms VNU’s commitment to leading the digital transformation in higher education.

In the context of digital transformation profoundly impacting all areas of social life, equipping students with digital thinking and foundational knowledge of AI is no longer optional; it has become an essential requirement of modern higher education. With strong awareness of this requirement, VNU has proactively developed and issued the general course “Introduction to Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence Applications” (Course Code: VNU1001) for all first-year students from the 2025 intake.

This course will be delivered online from September 2025 instead of the existing “Basic Informatics” module. This is the result of the decisive direction from the VNU Board of Presidents and a rigorous development process led by a dedicated task force and a team of experts in technology, education, and quality assurance from VNU Institute of Digital Education and Testing (VNU-IDT).

The course is structured in a modular format and carries 3 credits, comprising both compulsory and elective components tailored to specific academic disciplines, such as Natural Sciences, Technology and Engineering, Economics and Law, Social Sciences and Humanities, Foreign Languages and Education, etc. The course content is designed in alignment with international digital competency frameworks, while also ensuring compatibility with Vietnam’s National Digital Competency Framework stipulated in Circular No. 02/2025/TT-BGDDT dated January 24, 2025, issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Specifically, the course equips students with foundational knowledge of digital technology and artificial intelligence, from basic concepts to real-life and professional applications. It also develops students’ skills in using common digital and AI tools for learning, research, and problem-solving. Additionally, the course raises awareness of ethical considerations, academic integrity, digital safety, and responsible use of digital technologies, especially AI in academic and social contexts.

The course also emphasizes the development of creative thinking and adaptability to the digital environment, enabling students not to rely passively on AI, but to use it intelligently, effectively, and responsibly.

According to Dr. Nghiem Xuan Huy, Director of the Institute of Digital Education and Testing, a standout feature of the course is its fully online delivery model, utilizing modern and flexible digital technologies. Students will engage with content through video lectures, simulations, practical exercises, group projects, and thematic discussions, all guided and supported by VNU’s experienced faculty and academic advisors.

This modern teaching mode not only fosters learners’ autonomy and creativity but also enables personalized learning pathways, allowing students to access content according to their personal competencies and needs. At the same time, it serves as a key mechanism for realizing the OneVNU philosophy, ensuring consistent learning outcomes and unified training quality across VNU, regardless of academic disciplines or training units.

The implementation of the course “Introduction to Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence Applications” is part of VNU’s long-term strategy for advancing digital higher education and improving training quality together with innovation capacity and international integration.
