“Viet Nam – A perspective from Japan”

The Truth National Political Publishing House has recently collaborated with Sbooks to release the book “Viet Nam – A perspective from Japan” by Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo, President of the Japan–Viet Nam Friendship Association and Rector of the Viet Nam Japan University under the Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi.

In the context of Viet Nam–Japan relations being elevated to a “comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world,” this book has special significance. It is not only an academic work but also the culmination of nearly 50 years of profound commitment and rigorous research by a Japanese scholar dedicated to Viet Nam.

Unlike many historical books written in traditional chronological style, “Viet Nam – A Perspective from Japan” blends academic research with personal experience, and historical analysis with social observation.

Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo began studying Viet Nam in the late 1960s during the fierce resistance war against the US for national salvation. With his graduation thesis focusing on the August Revolution of 1945, he started his academic journey. In the almost half a century since, he has become one of the few Japanese scholars with in-depth knowledge of Viet Nam’s modern history.

The book comprises ten chapters with a scientific structure featuring rich, comprehensive content covering key aspects of Viet Nam’s history, economy, and society.

Through this book, readers are introduced to all aspects of Vietnamese people’s daily life such as daily routines, beliefs, language, and communication culture, as well as broader issues like nation-building history, anti-foreign resistance wars, political institutions, socio-economic development process, foreign relations, and Viet Nam’s role in the region.

Typical regions such as the Mekong Delta, the Northwestern region, and the Southeastern region, along with outstanding cities such as Ha Noi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City, are also described in detail through the author’s perspective and real-life experiences.

One of the book’s most attractive features is its “bottom-up” approach. Instead of focusing on major political events, the author explores many aspects of daily life to explain the unique features of Vietnamese society.

In addition to observing society, the author also offers profound analyses of major historical and cultural issues.

In the fields of religion and belief, the book not only lists the number of followers per sect, but it also reflects the depth of Vietnamese spiritual culture. The author affirms that religion and belief in Viet Nam are not just spiritual matters but also flexible and pragmatic social practices.

Some of Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo’s viewpoints in the book are subjective and different from the official viewpoints of Viet Nam. However, respecting the author and facilitating readers’ reference, the Truth National Political Publishing House has sought to preserve the author’s viewpoints, affirming that these are only the author’s opinions and do not represent the publisher’s viewpoints.

“Viet Nam – a perspective from Japan” is not only a mirror reflecting Viet Nam through an international lens but also a valuable spiritual gift, enriching the bridge of knowledge and friendship between the Vietnamese and Japanese peoples in today’s era of globalisation.

The Truth National Political Publishing House in collaboration with Sbooks will host an event to launch the book “Viet Nam – A perspective from Japan” featuring an exchange and dialogue programme between the author, Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo, and Prof. Vu Minh Giang with readers. The author will sign autographs for interested readers in attendance.
