Established in 2020, GMA brings together leading universities and online education platforms from across continents. Its current membership includes prestigious institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Cornell University, the University of Manchester, the University of Auckland, RWTH Aachen University, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore), St. Petersburg State University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Politecnico di Milano, Tecnológico de Monterrey, along with numerous world-leading digital education platforms and research institutes. With a mission to advance high-quality MOOCs, strengthen international cooperation in educational innovation, and contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all), GMA has become a major global forum driving innovation and digital transformation in higher education.
In 2025, GMA implemented a series of significant initiatives, including expanding the Global Hybrid Classroom model - integrating online and in-person learning across borders; fostering international dialogue on digital education through the Online Education Dialogue programs; developing the Global Open Courses network with participation from top universities worldwide; and enhancing collaboration through visits, strategic engagement, and membership expansion. These outcomes demonstrate GMA’s leading role in promoting high-quality online education models globally.

VNU’s accession to GMA marks a significant step forward in the integration and digital transformation strategy of Vietnam’s leading national university. Speaking at the session, Assoc.Prof. Pham Bao Son affirmed, “Joining the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance is not only an important milestone but also a strategic direction aligned with VNU’s vision to become a world-class research university that actively contributes to the global digital education space”. He emphasized the alignment between GMA’s mission and VNU’s strategic priorities in educational innovation, AI application, and widening learning opportunities for learners.
At the session, VNU presented its cooperation plan for the 2025–2030 period, which includes the co-development of MOOCs in both Vietnamese and English; the implementation of cross-border hybrid classroom models; strengthened research and application of AI in teaching and assessment; participation in GMA working groups and co-teaching programs; and the co-organization of workshops and training initiatives to support digital transformation in higher education across the region.
In line with GMA’s collective direction, VNU will chair GMA’s Executive Board Meeting and co-host the 2026 Global MOOC and Online Education Conference. This will be an important opportunity for Vietnam to promote digital education cooperation, disseminate innovative initiatives, and enhance its standing on the global higher education landscape.
Becoming a member of GMA affirms VNU’s pioneering role in the digital transformation of education, contributing to expanding Vietnam’s influence within the global network of innovative universities.
