Vietnam - Japan cooperation in semiconductor human resource training

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae paid an official visit to Vietnam from May 1 to May 3, 2026, further advancing Vietnam - Japan cooperation across key sectors, with semiconductor industry development identified as one of the top priorities.

Professor Usagawa Tsuyoshi, JICA expert and Special Advisor to the Rector, provided in-depth analysis on the objectives and potential of bilateral cooperation in this field from both corporate and academic perspectives in The Point program of Vietnam Today.

According to him, combining Japan’s technological strengths with Vietnam’s high-quality human resources will serve as a strategic approach to driving a breakthrough in the semiconductor industries of both countries. Regarding semiconductor workforce training, Professor Usagawa noted that this is currently a central focus of cooperation initiatives such as NEXUS - a program promoting scientific and technological collaboration between Japan and ASEAN - as well as university - industry partnership activities.

The program also featured Dr. Pham Tien Thanh, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Engineering (FATE), who shared insights on university - industry collaboration in semiconductor workforce development.

Vietnam Japan University (VJU) is a key player in Vietnam's strategy to train 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030, leveraging partnerships with top Japanese universities and firms. VJU offers specialized, Japan-standard curriculum in nanotechnology and engineering, providing students with internships at Japanese firms like Shiima Electronics and direct pathways to industry roles, aligning with Japan’s need for tech talent

At Vietnam Japan University, the Engineering of Semiconductor Chip Technology (ESCT) program began admissions in 2025, with the goal of training approximately 400 semiconductor engineers by 2030. With an experienced team of lecturers and advisors in the semiconductor field, along with a cutting-edge laboratory system, the ESCT program is expected to train a new generation of highly skilled engineers and experts capable of mastering core technologies and working in global environments.

Over the years, VNU has served as an important focal point for cooperation with Japanese partners, with increasingly substantive and expanding collaboration in training, research, and technology transfer. The University has been honored to welcome multiple generations of members of the Japanese Imperial Family and leaders of the Japanese Government, thereby continuously strengthening trust and deepening cooperative ties. On that foundation, VNU Vietnam Japan University stands as a typical example of the strategic vision and effective cooperation between the two governments in developing high-quality human resources.
