Students from VNU HUS School for Gifted students win gold medals at Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad

All six Vietnamese students selected for medal consideration at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) won medals, securing a total of two gold medals and four silver medals.

The Ministry of Education and Training has announced the official results of Viet Nam’s national team at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO), hosted online by Taiwan (China).

Viet Nam’s national team had six students eligible for medal consideration. The two gold medals were awarded to: Nguyen Huu Tuan and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, both 12th graders at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Science, Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi.

The four silver medals were awarded to: Nguyen Khanh Phuc, a 10th grader at Luong Van Tuy Specialised High School in Ninh Binh Province; Thai Van Gia Kien, a 12th grader at Ha Tinh Specialised High School in Ha Tinh Province; Dang Huy Hau, an 11th grader at Thang Long Specialised High School in Lam Dong Province; and Le Pham Duy Khoa, an 11th grader at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Science, Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi.

The 20th Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad was held from May 9 to 10, with the participation of 37 teams representing countries and territories. A total of 1,043 contestants took part in the competition, with 187 students eligible for medal consideration.

Overall, 16 contestants won gold medals, 47 won silver medals, and 93 received bronze medals.

Viet Nam’s national team consisted of 15 contestants, who sat the online examination at the University of Engineering and Technology under Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi. Under APIO regulations, Viet Nam was allowed to nominate the six highest-scoring contestants for medal consideration.

With all six nominated students winning medals, including two golds and four silvers, the Vietnamese Informatics Olympiad team achieved an outstanding second-place overall ranking, tied with Japan and behind Russia in first place. The achievement also helped Viet Nam maintain its leading position in Southeast Asia.

Based on the APIO results, four contestants will be selected to represent Viet Nam at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).

The national team’s outstanding performance at APIO 2026 once again affirms the quality of Viet Nam’s general education system, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of the Ministry of Education and Training’s efforts in identifying, selecting, and nurturing gifted students.
