11. Summary of the new findings of the dissertation:
- This dissertation is the first research that applies Area Studies perspectives and interdisciplinary methods to explore historical-cultural space of Hanoi city based on data of Hanoi’s street names from 1888 to 2008.
- The dissertation is the first research that focuses on the process of transformation of Hanoi’s street names from the period of French colonialism up to present under the effect of political authors, policies, social and cultural factors. From street names perspectives, motivations of (re)naming streets will be revealed to explore symbols were applied on Hanoi city by political regimes.
- In the dissertation, some up-to-date toponymic theories were applied to analyze Hanoi’s street names. The dissertation provides a new classification on Hanoi’s street names based on mechanism of naming streets.
12. Applicability:
- Based on data of Hanoi’s street names from French colonialism to the year 2008, the dissertation can provide an overview of historical-cultural space of Hanoi city during the period 1888-2008.
- The dissertation can analyze the transformation of Hanoi’s street names through historical stages during the period 1888-2008 which was affected by political, social, and cultural conditions. The hidden motivational factors that affected methods and practices of naming streets can be revealed.
- Based on system of Hanoi’s street names, the layers of historical – cultural characteristics of Hanoi city will be discovered through analyzing groups of Hanoi’s street names.
- The dissertation can be used as a textbook for educational purposes on Hanoi Studies.
13. Further research directions:
- Street names can be considered as a tool of commemoration of cultural values which belonged to the past. Also, street names can be a knot which ties ancient Hanoi city and modern Hanoi city.
- Nowadays, there is a trend of recalling the commemoration of historical figures who used to be negated in the past. Moreover, in the new urban areas in Hanoi, it seems that an emerging trend is returning to the way of (re)naming streets which existed in Hanoi from colonialism to the year 2008. This requires a further research which might focus on new emerged factors, such as, the community participation in to the process of naming streets, doing economic-social surveys before applying names to streets, and so on.
