- The dissertation can analyze the transformation of Hanoi’s street names through historical stages during the period 1888-2008 which was affected by political, social, and cultural conditions. The hidden motivational factors that affected methods and practices of naming streets can be revealed.

- Based on system of Hanoi’s street names, the layers of historical – cultural characteristics of Hanoi city will be discovered through analyzing groups of Hanoi’s street names.

13. Further research directions:

- Street names can be considered as a tool of commemoration of cultural values which belonged to the past. Also, street names can be a knot which ties ancient Hanoi city and modern Hanoi city.

- Nowadays, there is a trend of recalling the commemoration of historical figures who used to be negated in the past. Moreover, in the new urban areas in Hanoi, it seems that an emerging trend is returning to the way of (re)naming streets which existed in Hanoi from colonialism to the year 2008. This requires a further research which might focus on new emerged factors, such as, the community participation in to the process of naming streets, doing economic-social surveys before applying names to streets, and so on.
