The visit took place as part of the delegation’s official visit in Vietnam from July 20 to 23, aiming to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in education, science and technology, and the development of high-quality human resources.
The delegation was led by Mr. Hagiuda Koichi, Executive Acting Secretary-General of the LDP; and included Mr. Kono Taro, Director-General of the International Bureau; Mr. Koizumi Ryuji, Acting Director-General of the International Bureau; representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and other LDP officials. Also attending the meeting were H.E. Mr. Ito Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam; Mr. Kobayashi Yosuke, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Vietnam Office; and representatives of VJU’s faculties and administrative offices.
Providing an overview of VJU’s first decade of development, Rector Nguyễn Hoàng Oanh highlighted that VJU is a flagship cooperation project between the Governments of Vietnam and Japan. Since its establishment, VJU has received strong support from the Government of Japan through JICA, as well as from Japanese partner universities and enterprises. As a result, in 2025, VJU became the first higher education institution in Vietnam to earn the iJAS international accreditation awarded by the Japan University Accreditation Association (JUAA). The university currently offers 20 undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programs, serving nearly 2,000 students.
Looking ahead, Rector Nguyễn Hoàng Oanh noted that VJU is prioritizing the conclusion of the Vietnam Japan University Development Agreement, which is expected to provide a solid foundation for VJU’s long-term growth. The university aims to become a leading center for high-quality human resource development and interdisciplinary research in advanced engineering and technologies.
During the meeting, LDP representatives expressed strong interest in VJU’s long-term development strategy, including plans to expand enrollment, advance internationalization, and strengthen education in strategic technology fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Discussions also covered the university’s plans to attract international undergraduate students, its enrollment growth, the educational model at the Hoa Lac Campus, and its development roadmap in the coming years.

In particular, Mr. Hagiuda Koichi emphasized the potential for deeper Vietnam-Japan cooperation in developing talent for the semiconductor and AI industries. VJU representatives noted that both fields are among the university’s strategic priorities, supported by an expanding network of partnerships with Vietnam National University, Hanoi, leading Vietnamese universities, and Japanese institutions, including Kumamoto University. VJU also expressed its hope to continue receiving support from the Japanese Government, universities, and industry partners and, ultimately, to become a part of Japan’s higher education ecosystem, creating broader opportunities for faculty members and students to advance their expertise, research capabilities, and innovation.
The meeting reaffirmed Vietnam Japan University’s role in advancing Vietnam-Japan cooperation in higher education and human resource development. As the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries continues to deepen, VJU is expected to further strengthen its position as an academic bridge connecting Vietnam and Japan while contributing to the development of highly skilled professionals for both nations.
