QS World University Rankings by subject 2026: VNU expands into new subjects and rises in a number of subject areas

On March 25, 2026, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the results of its World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for 55 disciplines grouped into five broad subject areas across approximately 21,000 programs offered by 1,912 higher education institutions.

In the QS WUR by Subject 2026, VNU had 13 subjects ranked with 9 of which featured in the global top 500. A highlight of this ranking is that Linguistics and Modern Languages under VNU’s Arts and Humanities broad area, though ranked for the first time, both were listed in the global top 300.

In addition, according to the QS WUR by Subject 2026, VNU’s Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management also improved their rankings. Notably, Social Sciences and Management made a remarkable jump from the 501–550 bracket to 353rd globally.

VNU’s Arts & Humanities had individual disciplines ranked for the first time and all the ranked featured among the global top 300;

- Linguistics, ranked for the first time, was featured in the world’s 251–300 bracket;

- Modern Languages, ranked for the first time, was listed in the world’s 251–300 bracket, marking VNU as the first higher education institution in Vietnam ranked in this subject.

VNU’s Engineering & Technology saw a steady improvement, featuring in the world’s 401-450 bracket with four disciplines ranked.

- Computer Science & Information Systems continued to be listed in the 551–600 bracket globally, being consecutively ranked since the QS WUR 2019;

- Electrical & Electronic Engineering featured in the 501–550 bracket globally;

- Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering was ranked in the 451–500 bracket globally;

- Petroleum Engineering returned to the Rankings and maintained its position in the 101–150 bracket globally;

VNU’s Natural Sciences returned to the Rankings with three disciplines ranked and featured in the 451–500 bracket globally;

- Mathematics was ranked in the 401–450 bracket globally;

- Chemistry, ranked for the first time, featured in the 601–700 bracket globally;

- Environmental Sciences improved its position, featuring in the 401–450 bracket globally.

VNU’s Social Sciences & Management saw a significant rise, ranking 353rd globally, with three out of its four disciplines ranked among the global top 400;

- Business & Management Studies was ranked in the 501–550 bracket globally;

- Economics & Econometrics continued to improve its position, featuring in the 301–350 bracket globally;

- Accounting & Finance maintained its position among the 301–375 bracket globally;

- Law & Legal Studies maintained its position among the 351–400 bracket globally.

The QS WUR by subject 2026 evaluated universities across 5 indicators, including: Academic reputation; Employer reputation; Research citations per paper; H-index; and International research network.

The QS ranking indicators emphasize a higher education institution’s impact on society (through the assessment of scholars and employers); contributions to scientific research (through citations per paper and H-index); and internationalization of scientific research (through International research network).
