The establishment of the Vietnam - China University Network and the enhanced cooperation in the field of Digital education are clear demonstrations of the joint commitment by the two leading higher education institutions to strengthening scientific and educational collaboration between the two countries in general, and between the two universities in particular, especially in the context of the 75th anniversary of Vietnam - China diplomatic relations and the Year of Vietnam - China Humanistic Exchange.

The idea of establishing a “Vietnam - China University Network”

VNU and Tsinghua University have agreed on a plan to co-found a “Vietnam - China University Network” - a platform for institutions from Vietnam and China to cooperate in research, education enhancement and training activities, thus contributing to disseminating knowledge and culture. Promoting cooperation among educational institutions through this Network will also help Vietnam improve the quality of its expert workforce, master advanced technologies, and drive breakthroughs in the country’s socio-economic development in the era of the nation’s rise.

Prof. Le Quan and Prof. Qiu Yong signed a memorandum of understanding between the two universities on August 27, 2024

The Vietnam - China University Network members will be expected to cooperate in implementing the following activities, but not limited to: Taking part in joint research projects; Conducting joint training programs; Jointly organizing scientific events; Exchanging information, documents and scientific publications; Jointly publishing research results; Exchanging staff, teachers and students, etc.

In addition, to facilitate the implementation of cooperative activities and lay the foundation for joint initiatives between the two sides while fostering timely knowledge exchange and ties, both universities have agreed to consider the establishment of a collaborative Vietnam-China Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Research and Development between the two universities with the participation of representatives from other universities.

Promoting cooperation in digital education

Today, AI is emerging as a global technological trend to which universities are no exception. Aiming to become a digital university, VNU has been actively applying AI as part of its digital transformation efforts across three key areas, started with university governance, followed by teaching and then, research, on an AI-based digital management platform which enables data-driven decision-making.

The development of AI is of great importance in the current context and serves as a key driver for economic and social progress. Therefore, establishing a sustainable partnership between VNU and Tsinghua University not only promotes scientific advancement in the field of AI but also opens up numerous opportunities for practical applications. It lays the groundwork for joint initiatives between the two institutions through the promotion of academic exchange.

VNU in collaboration with Tsinghua University, China, organized the Vietnam-China Higher Education Seminar: Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century - The Digital Intelligence Era on March 1

Both sides encourage in-depth cooperation in the field of AI-powered education, with a focus on enhancing teaching quality, providing personalized learning pathways for students, and optimizing instructional processes and content design for lecturers. These efforts aim to promote the deep integration of AI into teaching and learning activities. The two universities also support joint research initiatives in AI-driven education, sharing experiences and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.

The sharing of course resources among educational institutions and joint teaching efforts are key factors in promoting educational innovation and cultural exchange. VNU and Tsinghua University will leverage open online learning platforms (MOOCs) to strengthen academic exchange and foster interaction between faculty members and students through collaborative courses. Promoting the exchange and sharing of MOOC resources between the two universities will enable students to access high-quality online courses. Both universities will also utilize the MOOC platforms and the Global Hybrid Classroom to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration between faculty and students from both sides.

In 2020, Tsinghua University initiated the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance with Tsinghua University as its Secretariat. The Alliance currently includes 23 members from 16 countries. Tsinghua University will provide comprehensive support for VNU to join the Alliance and help expand VNU’s international education network in the near future. Through the Alliance, VNU will have opportunities to collaborate with leading global universities and international education platforms, participate in joint teaching activities, build capacity, share knowledge, and promote public education initiatives. This partnership will contribute to sustainable development and enhance international educational exchange within the framework of the Alliance.
