This was the first time VNU hosted a symposium to engage and interact with Vietnamese scientists and experts abroad. The symposium aimed to strengthen the international academic cooperation network, attract high-quality intellectual resources, promote strategic collaborative programs, and contribute to enhancing VNU’s international standing.
VNU President, Prof. Le Quan, attended the symposium and briefed about VNU’s policies on attracting scholars and experts.
Attending the symposium was the President of the Vietnam-Australia Scholars and Experts Association (VASEA) together with overseas Vietnamese scientists and experts.
Prof. Le Quan emphasized that VNU has been implementing strong comprehensive and sustainable policies to concretize the major guidelines and policies of the Party and the State on developing high-quality human resources, promoting international integration, and enhancing the quality of higher education and scientific research in Vietnam. VNU is taking the lead in implementing the key Resolutions of the Party Central Committee, especially Resolution No. 45-NQ/TW and Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, which focus on developing the intellectual workforce, fostering breakthroughs in science, technology, and digital transformation. These are strategic orientations for building VNU into an innovative university among the leading research universities in the region and the world.
With the motto “Innovation – National Responsibility – Breakthrough Development”, VNU places strong emphasis on attracting and leveraging the intellectual contributions of both domestic and international distinguished scholars. The university has achieved significant progress in global rankings and pioneered reforms in governance models for building an academic–innovation ecosystem. On July 3, 2025, VNU President Le Quan signed Decision No. 3436/QD-DHQGHN on launching VNU’s pilot Visiting Professor Program with the aim of inviting and recognizing about 100 outstanding scientists, experts, and scholars from Vietnam and abroad to engage in teaching, research, and knowledge transfer at VNU during the 2026-2031 period. This initiative is not only a breakthrough effort in talent attraction but also a way for VNU to establish a high-quality academic network, promote an international academic culture, and foster the development of young faculty members and researchers.

At the meeting, along with general information about VNU, Prof. Tran Thi Thanh Tu – Director of the Science and Innovation Department introduced VNU’s new science and innovation policies. These include: VNU’s Action Program to implement Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW and Resolution No. 03/NQ-CP on breakthroughs in national science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation; investment policies for strong research groups; key research programs; the Outstanding Scientist Scheme; the VNU Visiting Professor Program; and the list of technologies for priority investment in the 2025–2035 period.
Prof. Tran Thi Thanh Tu emphasized that through the Visiting Professor Program, professors and scientists from VASEA and abroad can conduct advanced teaching, organize seminars and workshops, co-supervise doctoral and master’s students, and mentor talented undergraduates. This collaboration also plays an important role in developing strong research groups, VNU-level key laboratories, centers of excellence, and fostering international publications.
At the symposium, Prof. Nghiem Duc Long – VASEA President, said that VASEA is ready to accompany VNU in implementing the Visiting Professor Program. This commitment is not only to bring leading professors and experts from Australia and the overseas Vietnamese intellectual community to teach and conduct research at VNU, but also to establish interdisciplinary research groups, share experiences in university governance, technology transfer, and innovation. With its extensive network and expertise across multiple fields – from science and engineering to socio-economics and culture, VASEA can serve as a bridge to connect VNU with international professors, experts, and partners. This will open up opportunities for long-term collaboration, enhance research capacity, and promote international integration.

At the symposium, VNU leaders and scientists engaged in open discussions on proposals for cooperation in research and training, mechanisms for collaboration among scientists, and favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese professors and scientists to implement academic activities and effectively connect with VNU faculty members, researchers, and doctoral candidates, thereby making meaningful contributions to Vietnam’s science and higher education.
The scholars expressed strong consensus on participating in VNU’s programs, while also noting the necessity of establishing partnerships between VNU and the international institutions – their current employers. Such partnerships would lay the foundation for developing joint research centers and collaborative research groups, which not only produce valuable scientific outcomes but also create sustainable avenues for overseas Vietnamese scientists to contribute in a formal and long-term manner, thereby promoting the sustainable development of Vietnam’s science.
VNU President Le Quan believed that the participation of VASEA and overseas Vietnamese scholars, together with VNU’s initiatives, represents a strategic step toward building a strong international scientific network. This will foster cooperation in research, application, and innovation, while also spreading the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW among overseas Vietnamese scientists, who are eager to dedicate their intellect and efforts to advancing Vietnam’s science and technology in the new era.
