QS Asia University Rankings 2026: VNU ranked 158th – a sharp rise in academic reputation, employer reputation, and internationalization

On November 4, 2025, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the results of the QS Asia University Rankings 2026 (QS AUR 2026). Accordingly, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to improve its standing: ranked 158th and placed among the top 10.3% of higher education institutions in Asia.

The QS AUR 2026 is also the largest ranking to date, featuring 1,529 higher education institutions from 25 countries and territories across Asia, with 558 first-timers. The results are based on an extensive analysis of over 1.5 million academic votes and 520,000 employer votes worldwide. In addition, QS analyzed more than 200 million citations from 19.8 million research publications.

VNU’s results in this ranking reflect significant improvements in the quality of its training and research through high-weight indicators. Regarding reputation and training quality, the two most important criteria - Academic Reputation (weighted 30%) and Employer Reputation (weighted 20%), both saw strong gains: ranked 122nd (up 14 places) and 128th (up 9 places), respectively. These results affirm that VNU’s research and training quality is increasingly recognized by the global academic community and employers.

VNU’s research quality and capacity is also clearly demonstrated through the International Research Network indicator, where VNU rose 14 places to feature among the top 75 universities in Asia. This indicator reflects strong international integration and extensive research collaboration of VNU’s scholars and member units.

VNU President Hoang Minh Son emphasized that, along with other Vietnamese universities, VNU is fully aware that to catch up with the world’s leading universities, it must make strong efforts to innovate its governance model, enhance the quality of training and research, expand international cooperation, and promote integration based on quality standards. The issuance   of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW and Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW, together with the recent directives of the General Secretary, has created significant opportunities and favorable conditions for Vietnam’s higher education system in general and for VNU in particular in international integration, affirming its position on the global knowledge map.

According to VNU President Hoang Minh Son, rank is not VNU’s ultimate goal, but rather a tool and benchmark for comparison, learning, and continuous improvement; thereby enhancing quality toward international standards. VNU’s top priority is to fulfill its national responsibility — making practical contributions to the training of high-quality human resources, conducting research and knowledge transfer, and providing policy consultation to serve the country’s sustainable development.

“VNU wishes to work hand in hand with other Vietnamese universities to strengthen cooperation, share experiences, and grow together; thereby enhancing the standing of Vietnam’s higher education system in the region and the world, and contributing to the nation’s development mission in the new era,” said VNU President Hoang Minh Son.

With the expansion of the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, 25 Vietnamese higher education institutions were ranked, including 8 first-timers. Among the previously ranked, 7 institutions improved their ranks, 1 maintained its rank, and 9 saw a decline in their standing.
