Developing the capacity of VNU’s faculty members and staff in an international environment

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) identifies the development of faculty and staff capacity in an international environment as a key pillar for enhancing the quality of education and training, scientific research, and the overall international integration capacity of the entire system.

On this basis, VNU has implemented a comprehensive set of programs, schemes, and mechanisms to strengthen professional expertise, foreign language proficiency, international pedagogical methods, and research capacity among lecturers, researchers, and managerial staff.

Under the Project “Enhancing Teaching and Scientific Research Capacity in an International Environment through 2030”, during the past period, VNU aims to send 100 lecturers and researchers to participate in teaching, research, and academic exchange activities at overseas education and research institutions. In the 2026-2030 period, this number is expected to increase to 300, thereby gradually forming a cohort of scientists and research groups with advanced regional and international standing.

By 2025, VNU had a total of 5,563 staff members, including 3,084 academic staff, comprising 2,819 lecturers and 265 full-time researchers. The proportion of lecturers holding doctoral degrees reached 64.3%; the proportion of academic staff with doctoral or doctor of science degrees was 61%; and 22.1% of full-time lecturers held the academic titles of professor or associate professor. Across the entire VNU system, there are currently 631 professors and associate professors, and 1,881 holders of doctoral or Doctor of Science degrees, reflecting a strong scientific human resource base.

In parallel with the development of domestic human resources, in 2025, VNU hosted 667 international experts and lecturers for teaching and research activities, while hundreds of VNU lecturers were sent abroad for training and professional exchange. VNU also places strong emphasis on enhancing the international capacity of its managerial staff, thereby fostering an integrated academic human resource ecosystem and strengthening VNU’s position within the regional and global higher education landscape.

Through these strategic efforts, VNU continues to cultivate a dynamic, globally connected academic community capable of responding to emerging challenges in higher education and scientific innovation. The university actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, international joint research projects, and participation in global academic networks. By aligning human resource development with international standards and best practices, VNU not only enhances individual competencies but also improves institutional governance and research productivity. These initiatives contribute significantly to VNU’s long-term vision of becoming a leading research-oriented university in Asia, with strong global influence and sustainable international partnerships.
