VNU’s development of a network of strong research groups and key laboratories

The development of a network of strong research groups and key laboratories continues to be identified by VNU as a core pillar in organizing scientific research activities, contributing to the enhancement of science and technology capacity and the academic competitiveness of a multidisciplinary research university.

In the past year, VNU had established 50 strong research groups, including 33 basic research groups, 15 applied research groups, and 2 groups focusing on pilot production and commercialization, forming a research ecosystem balanced across fundamental research, applied research, and innovation.

These strong research groups achieved notable results, producing 391 international publications, of which 157 were in Q1 journals; developing 5 key technology products which generate a revenue of over 200 million VND, and 5 core products which serve as foundations for the formation of spin-off enterprises. These outcomes demonstrate a clear shift from purely theoretical research toward research linked with innovation and market application, while significantly contributing to international publications, postgraduate training, and the creation of applied science and technology products. Also, VNU’s system of key laboratories and research centers continued to be developed with a focus on modernization, interdisciplinarity, and international connectivity. By 2025, VNU had 7 key laboratories/research centers at VNU level and 1 key laboratory at national level, serving as integrated spaces for research, training, and technology transfer.

The network of strong research groups and key laboratories is closely linked to 11 national strategic technologies under Decision No. 3368/QĐ-ĐHQGHN, contributing to enhanced research capacity, progressing toward financial autonomy in R&D, and affirming VNU’s central role in the national science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.

Looking ahead, VNU will continue to prioritize investment in strong research groups and key laboratories through targeted funding mechanisms, talent attraction policies, and expanded international collaboration. Greater emphasis will be placed on linking research groups with industry partners, localities, and global research networks to accelerate technology transfer and commercialization outcomes. VNU also aims to further integrate these research entities into postgraduate training programs, thereby nurturing the next generation of high-quality researchers. These strategic directions are expected to enhance research impact, improve resource efficiency, and reinforce VNU’s position as a leading national hub for science, technology, and innovation.
