MGIMO – VNU Online Education Week: Academic Forum on Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence

On May 12, 2025, following the exchange of the cooperation agreement in the presence of General Secretary To Lam and Russian President Vladimir Putin (on May 10), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) jointly launched the Online Education Week themed “Global Strategy and the Digital Future: Diplomacy, Climate Change, and Artificial Intelligence in a Changing World”.

VNU President Prof. Le Quan and MGIMO President, Prof. Academician Anatoly Torkunov, co-chaired the opening session held in Moscow, the Russian Federation.

The Online Education Week is a valuable series of academic events where international experts share their perspectives, experiences, and in-depth analyses on pressing global strategic issues, such as foreign policy, climate change, artificial intelligence, digital diplomacy, and energy. The MGIMO - VNU Online Week takes place from May 12 to 16, with the participation of nearly 200 administrators, lecturers, and researchers.

In his opening remarks, VNU President Le Quan emphasized that VNU always values and continuously promotes international cooperation, considering it one of the key drivers for enhancing the quality of education and scientific research, as well as for integrating with the world’s advanced educational systems. The partnership between VNU and MGIMO is built not only on mutual trust and a shared strategic vision but also on strong support, dedicated attention, and recognition at the highest level. In particular, the fact that General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin jointly witnessed the exchange of the cooperation agreement between VNU and MGIMO on May 10, 2025, marked an exceptionally significant milestone. This event not only affirmed the strategic importance and deep political trust between the two institutions but also reflected the strong endorsement from both countries' top leadership for strengthening collaboration in education, science, and technology. It provides additional momentum for the two universities to implement concrete and effective cooperative activities.

The topics selected for this lecture series ranging from “Governing AI for Humanity”, “Artificial Intelligence and Digital Diplomacy”, “Russia on the Global Climate Agenda”, “The Grand Strategy of Russia - Foreign Policy”, to “Energy Diplomacy of Russia in Contemporary Realities”, are all highly topical issues that reflect the major challenges and opportunities the world is currently facing.

Through the Week’s lectures and discussion sessions, VNU scientists and lecturers will have the opportunity to update their knowledge, exchange professional experiences, and explore potential research directions together with their colleagues from MGIMO. This is also a valuable occasion for all parties to jointly reflect, analyze, and seek creative solutions that contribute to sustainable development and shared prosperity.

During a working session held earlier the same day, VNU Prof. Le Quan and Prof. Academician Anatoly Torkunov discussed ways to promote collaborative activities under the framework of the signed agreement. In the near future, VNU and MGIMO will continue to advance bilateral cooperation, not only in training and scientific research related to artificial intelligence, digital media, and digital business, but also in other areas of mutual strength and interest. The two universities will maintain and expand the online lecture series, while also implementing internship programs, student exchange initiatives, and joint degree programs. In addition, both sides also explored the possibility of establishing a MGIMO campus at VNU. The heads of both institutions expressed their strong belief that, with joint efforts, the partnership between VNU and MGIMO will continue to flourish, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources, promoting innovation, and strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of Vietnam and the Russian Federation.
